Introduction to NARIS
NARIS is the acronym for Korean Natural History Research Information System, which is a system that consolidates scattered and diverse information into an integrated database for general use.
It is a standard natural history DB system in compliance with the standards of the ICOM(International Council of Museums) and GBIF(Global Biodiversity Information Facility), providing the natural history information stored in the existing South Korean data bases, local natural history museums, and colleges, and science museums. Also, it is a system that can connect to world-wide networks as the National Science Museum serves as the GBIF Data Node.
Background
-
- Heightened importance of the bio-diversity resources
- Increased securement, management, and utilization of biological resources to address such issues as climate change, low-carbon green growth, and biological sovereignty, etc.
-
- Increased competition between
nations to secure biological diversity resources
- Regarding the raw materials for bio industries, the developed countries have been establishing preservation and management centers run by major organizations in order to identify, secure, and manage national biological resources.
-
- The bio-diversity resources are
used to establish the informationization
of bio-diversity resources
- The developed countries of OECD recognize that bio-diversity resources are key materials for the bio industry and have been engaged in the comprehensive, national-level management of them as well as attempting to use them in a more strategic manner. Also, they have been establishing a well-organized management system in order to preserve and utilize bio-diversity resources.
-
- Cooperation with the international organizations,
international standardization, and
realization of bio-sovereignty
